30 Jan 2007: State govt likely to shelve Cochin Metro Rail project

The search for a Mass Rapid Transport System (MRTPS) for Kerala’s booming commercial capital of Cochin is back to square one with the state government planning to shelve the metro rail project. The government had earlier dropped the skybus project mooted by the Konkan Railway Corporation (KRC) following doubts over its technical viability.

The government felt that the sky bus was not immediately possible as it was based on a new technology that was not experimented anywhere in the world. The objections to the metro rail has come from the State Planning Board, which felt that the project costing around Rs23 billion would not be financially viable. A full meeting of the board held here last week has asked the government to look for other alternative systems of mass transport.

Planning Board vice-chairman Prof Prabhat Patnaik said that it would not be possible for the government to take up the project as it would suck up resources that the state badly needs for developing other infrastructure.
