DIC(K) was founded at a meeting in Thrissur by the K. Karunakuran fraction of the Indian National Congress on May 1, 2005. Initially it was called National Congress (Indira), but the name was changed DIC(K) for registration purposes in August same year.

Important Development  05 Jul 2005: Karunakaran takes split to CLP as 9 Congress MLAs quit in Kerala

Taking the split in Congress in Kerala to its legislative wing, nine MLAs loyal to Karunakaran today resigned their assembly membership and joined the National Congress (Indira) floated by the veteran leader after parting ways with the Congress two months back.

Though the en masse resignation, the first such instance in Kerala, posed no threat to the stability of the UDF Government headed by Oommen Chandy, it came as a political embarrassment to the Congress and the UDF coalition.

Deciding to leave the assembly when 11 months are left for elections, the MLAs handed in their letters to Speaker Therambil Ramakrishnan at the assembly complex, where the monsoon session of the House is on.

The MLAs said they were quitting to expose the "misrule and failures" of the Chandy Government and held that the UDF had lost the moral right to remain in office.

With the resignation of the MLAs, the effective strength of the 140-member House had been reduced to 130. The Cherthala seat left by CWC member A K Antony following his election to the Rajya Sabha is already lying vacant.

The strength of UDF which came to power in 2001 with 99 members has now come down to 84. The LDF has 41 members and the opposition benches recently swelled to 46 with Kerala Congress Pillai and Jacob factions and Shibu Baby John of RSP (B) leaving the UDF.

K. Muraleedharan has been unanimously elected president of the Democratic Indira Congress-Karunakaran (DIC-K) at the conclusion of the party's organisational elections on Wednesday.

K. Karunakaran will be the chairman of the parliamentary board, which will finalise the list of candidates for the Assembly elections. K. Muraleedharan and T.M. Jacob will be ex-officio members in their respective capacities as leaders of the party and the legislature party.

The other members are M.P. Gangadharan, M.K. Latheef, D. Sugathan and Radha Raghavan.

24 Mar 2006: Cong, DIC(K) reach accord, agree to talk merger post-poll

In a significant development ahead of Assembly elections in Kerala, Congress and DIC(K) led by K Karunakaran today formalised a seat-sharing accord and agreed to discuss and facilitate merger of the two parties post-poll.

The DIC-K is getting 17 seats from Congress kitty while one seat will be offered by ruling UDF constituent Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) which had taken initiative to bring about a rapprochement between Karunakaran and his earlier party.

The agreement was signed by KPCC President Ramesh Chennithala and DIC-K President K Muraleedharan at the residence of Chief Minister Oommen Chandy, marking the end of now-on and now-off negotiations led by CWC member in charge of Kerala affairs Veerappa Moily for the last two days.

One of the conditions in the agreement was that the "issue of merger of DIC-K with Congress will be discussed and facilitated after the elections." Chandy, who was initially opposed to any kind of tie-up with Karunakaran's party formed after breaking Congress ten months back, said the accord was signed with a clear understanding that DIC-K would merge with Congress after the polls.

Important Development  09 Sep 2006: Kerala's DIC to split

Former Kerala chief minister K. Karunakaran's Democratic Indira Congress (DIC-K), which plans to merge with the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), suffered a jolt Saturday as the former Kerala Congress (Jacob) party announced its decision to break away.

The KC (J), led by T.M. Jacob and Johnny Nellore, wants to work with the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF). 'It has been decided that the Kerala Congress (Jacob) party would now be revived and we will work alongside the Congress-led UDF,' Jacob told reporters here.

The KC (J) had merged with the DIC-K Aug 21, 2005.

'The political scenario in 2005 made us leave the UDF and today's circumstances are totally different and so we decided to return,' said Jacob.

13 Sep 2006: DIC(K) vice-president quits party, to join Congress

Opposing his party's decision to merge with Sharad Pawar-led NCP, DIC(K) state Vice-President and former Kerala Minister P Sankaran today announced that he was quitting the party and returning to the Congress.

"The DIC(K)'s decision to merge with the NCP is against the very principles on which the party was formed. Also, this is an attempt to join hands with the Left forces," he told a press conference here.

Democratic Indira Congress (K) leader K Karunakaran and Pawar led the first round of talks here last night on the former's merger with the NCP.

Accusing the leadership of not even discussing the merger issue at the party level, Sankaran said several functionaries, including DIC(K) district Vice-President E K Gopalakrishnan and General Secretary M K Sahadevan, had also decided to join the Congress along with him.

21 Sep 2006: DIC(K) decides to merge with NCP

The Democratic Indira Congress (Karunakaran) on Wednesday formalised its decision to merge with the Nationalist Congress Party led by Union Minister Sharad Pawar. The DIC(K) announced its merger decision without waiting for LDF's clearance knowing well that some of the coalition constituents were opposed to it.

DIC(K) president K. Muraleedharan termed the merger ``a synergy of Mr. Pawar's stature as an all-India leader and the huge popular base of Mr. Karunakaran to bring together all true Congressmen under one roof.'' Further stages leading to the merger and other issues would be discussed in due course, he said.

07 Dec 2006: LDF wins Thiruvambady, kicks off debate on Karunakaran

The ruling Left Democratic Front (LDF)'s wafer-thin victory margin in Thiruvambady assembly by-polls in Kerala has thrown up enough food for thought for the victor and the vanquished, including open unhappiness among some on the entry of Kerala veteran K. Karunakaran into the LDF.

Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) candidate George M. Thomas scraped through by just 246 votes over nearest rival V.M. Ummer Master of the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML), an ally of the opposition United Democratic Front (UDF).

While Thomas bagged 64,112 votes, Ummer got 63,866 votes and the Bharatiya Janata Party's Gireesh Thevally 4,758 votes.

An interesting fallout of the result was the attitude towards K. Karunakaran and the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) to which he now belongs after merging his Democratic Indira Congress-Karunakaran with it last month.

'Maybe the LDF would have got higher majority If we did not have the support of Karunakaran,' said Communist Party of India (CPI) state secretary Veliyam Bharghavan.

Achuthanandan aired similar views. 'I don't think the voters have taken the role played by Karunakaran and NCP as a good response,' he said.

But Pinnarayi Vijayan, state secretary CPI-M, did not think so. He said: 'Both Karunakaran and the NCP gave us enough support and helped us.'

Karunakaran said it clearly indicated that the NCP cannot be ignored.

'I do not see this victory as an endorsement of the Achuthanandan government, because it was more an emotional election after the death of CPI-M legislator Mathai Chacko,' said the veteran who is now waiting for a call from the LDF.

And now with the results out, all eyes are on what would be the stand of the LDF with the CPI-M and CPI at logger heads

Important Development  11 Dec 2006: Kerala govt ousts NCP from coalition

The Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), currently being led in Kerala by the former Chief Minister K. Karunakaran, suffered a major humiliation on Monday when the ruling Left Democratic Front (LDF) leadership formally asked the party to leave the alliance.

NCP leaders who reached the AKG Centre here on Monday morning to attend the LDF State committee meeting could not attend it as leaders of the Communist Party of India (CPI) took strong objection to their presence. The Revolutionary Socialist Party also took the same stand. Communist Party of India (Marxist) State secretary Pinarayi Vijayan also informed the meeting that there had been no rethink on his party's decision to keep former Democratic Indira Congress (Karunakaran) leaders and workers out of the LDF. With that it became clear that the NCP has no place in the LDF. And the NCP representatives were asked to leave the meeting.

LDF convener Vaikom Viswan told reporters during the noon-break of the meeting that the decision to ask the NCP to leave the LDF was `unanimous.' He said the decision had become inevitable in the changed political context. The LDF had decided earlier not to accommodate the DIC(K) in the LDF. Since the DIC(K) had the upper hand in the NCP in Kerala, there could be no change in the LDF's stand. However, this had nothing to do with the national-level alliance between the Left and the NCP, he said.
