Important Development  20 Jan 2008: Foundation stone for Cybercity in Kalamassery

After Smart City and High-Tech City, a Cyber City is set to come up in Kerala's port city of Cochin to exploit its immense potential in IT and IT enabled services.

Industries Minister Elamaram Kareem yesterday laid the foundation stone for the Cyber City, which will come up on 70 acres of land at Kalamaserry, near the Smart City being developed by the Dubai Technology and Media Free zone Authority (TECOM) on 246 acres of land at Kakkanad.

The city to be built by the Housing Development and Infrastructure Limited (HDIL) through its subsidiary Blue Star Realtors at a cost of Rs40 billion will be the state's first integrated IT township, the promoters said.

Besides built up space for IT and IT enabled services companies, the Cyber City will have residential apartments, schools, shopping malls, multiplex, and a star hotel, said Rakesh Kumar Wadhawan, chairman of HDIL. The township will become functional in two years time.

The township, which will have a built up area of eight million square feet, is expected to provide 60,000 direct and 150,000 indirect jobs.

21 Jan 2008: Minister V S Achuthanandan boycotts Cybercity foundation stone ceremony

The foundation stone for the Rs 40-bn ‘Housing Development Infrastructure Limited Cyber City’ here yesterday even as Chief Minister V S Achuthanandan (pictured) kept off the occasion of the “most important” private sector investment in the state.

Much is being read into the absence of the chief minister, especially in the wake of the allegation that Hindustan Machine Tools did not have the mandate to sell “lease-held” land to another party.

However, district collector Mohammed Haneesh clarified that HMT had full right on the land since it hadn’t been a leasehold property. The State Government had given 100 acres unconditionally to the central PSU in 2000.

Brushing aside innuendos, Kareem said the project aimed at generating 60,000 direct and 150,000 indirect employment opportunities in the IT/ITES sectors.
