| 30 Aug 2006: Kerala logs Microsoft out
With Kerala government expelling Microsoft from schools, entrepreneurs attached to the state government’s e-literacy project now have to decide between proprietary and free software. This is because after schools, the government may think of making the Akshaya State e-literacy project take up free software. Project director T K Manzoor said, as of now, “it’s the choice of entrepreneurs and their customers. Akshaya entrepreneurs already have the option to decide for themselves as to which software to choose. I do not think that the government will force them to migrate to Linux,” he said. Last week, Chief Minister V S Achuthanandan received free software guru Richard Stallman at his office, a few days after he had banned Coke and Pepsi.
Achuthanandan had turned a Stallman fan after the his maiden visit to the state few years back and he had aggressively campaigned against monopoly in software industry.
But he did not respond to the reports then that his personal computer was working on the Microsoft operating system. “Stallman has raised resistance against attempts of capitalists to monopolise knowledge, especially in the IT sector. He has made IT, a free enterprise,” Achuthanandan said while inaugurating a seminar on free software. The previous Congress-led government provided schools the option to choose between free and proprietary software and trained the instructors in both.
However, Education Minister M A Baby said schools will now have to stick to the free software alone.“We are not against Microsoft and have not banned it. What we are opposing is monopoly and we’re going to encourage free software,” he said.

| 09 Dec 2006: DGP faces music over piracy raid
The issue of the suspension and consequent reinstatement of IGP Rishi Raj Singh of the state's crime branch has exposed not just chinks in the police establishment but also the differences within the ruling CPM's leadership.
Kerela Chief Minister, V S Achuthananthan, hauled up the Director General of Police Raman Srivastava for stopping IGP Rishi Raj Singh of the Anti-Piracy Wing from raiding the Riyan Music studio and asked him to step aside.
The studio belongs to the wife of IGP Tomin Thachankery.
"Stopping an officer in his line of duty will only bring disrepute to the police force and the government. The DGP has no answer for taking such a strange decision. So I have asked him to reinstate the investigation officer with immediate effect," Achuthanandan said.
And all that DGP Srivastava had to say later was, "The Chief Minsiter has asked me to reinstate the officer to his post and that will be done very soon."

| 10 Dec 2006: 3 top cops, CM star in Kerala’s piracy musical
This could have been from a proper B-grade flick:
An IG of police heading the state anti-piracy cell helps the daughter of an ex-supercop fighting video piracy to raid a big Kochi studio.
The studio’s owner, suspected to be pirating movie videos, is the wife of another IG of police, a famously well-connected senior officer who was himself with the same state anti-piracy cell some time ago, even playing the poster-boy in its ads.
As the raid party reaches the studio gates, things stir at the political heights. The DGP rings the anti-piracy IG asking him to keep off that studio, he doesn’t oblige. Within minutes, the DGP faxes the order to take him off the beat, while the studio men gang up and foil the raid. Next morning, the CM decides to assert, summons the DGP and asks him to give IG No 1 his job back. That done, he gets the policemen to go and raid the studio.
But there is more to the story.... read it in the original link:

| 11 Dec 2006: Kerala govt ousts NCP from coalition
The ruling Left Democratic Front in Kerala on Monday expelled the Nationalist Congress Party from the coalition, putting K Karunakaran and his supporters out in the political wilderness once again. Mr Karunakaran’s Democratic Indira Congress (K) had recently merged with the NCP to make an entry into the LDF.
LDF convenor Vaikom Viswan said the decision to expel NCP from the front was unanimous and that the move was in the light of the “changed political climate” after DIC(K)’s merger with NCP.
